A wonderfully eccentric vintage John-Richard Chinoiserie tray table featuring a stylized golden pheasant amid delicate branches and foliage, rendered across a richly antiqued golden-ochre ground.
The removable round tray is centered by a long-tailed crested bird painted in layered shades of burgundy, coral pink, black, cream and muted green. Its exaggerated plumage and elegant stance give the composition the fanciful character of historic Chinoiserie bird decoration rather than the precision of an ornithological illustration.
Behind the bird, slender branches and softly rendered green leaves move across an intentionally distressed field of warm yellow and ochre. An extensive craquelure treatment, rubbed coloration and darkened recesses give the surface the appearance of a much older decorative panel.
The composition is enclosed by an ornate foliate border worked in warm amber, gold and dark brown. A raised gallery rim in a deep, softly burnished wood tone frames the entire tray, lending the petite table considerable visual presence while also making the top practical for books, flowers, glassware or a curated arrangement of collected objects.
The removable tray rests upon a coordinating four-legged faux-bamboo stand. Each tapered leg is painted to suggest natural bamboo cane, with darkened nodes and graduated tones of honey, amber and burnt umber. Intersecting X-form stretchers meet at squared central connectors, giving the base an especially architectural silhouette and providing structural stability.
Four short pegs at the top of the stand fit securely into corresponding recessed sockets beneath the tray. The top lifts away without tools and may be used independently as a serving or display tray.
For a designer, the table offers the rare combination of useful scale, recognizable maker, sculptural construction and unapologetic color. At only twenty inches in diameter, it can introduce a concentrated moment of pattern and personality without overwhelming a room.
Position it beside a bergère, slipper chair or upholstered settee; use it as a martini table in a paneled library; or place it between two lounge chairs in a jewel-box sitting room. It would also make a memorable bedside table in a layered Grandmillennial guest room.
Its golden ochre, coral, burgundy and leafy green palette would be especially compelling against lacquered aubergine, peacock blue, celadon, oxblood, tobacco brown or coral walls. Style it alongside blue-and-white porcelain, Chinese export objects, lacquerware, leopard velvet, patterned chintz, ikat textiles, antique brass and dark wood furniture.
In a quieter neutral interior, the table functions as a singular decorative punctuation mark—the kind of unexpected, storied-looking object that keeps a sophisticated room from appearing overly coordinated.
A distinctive and scarce discontinued John-Richard design combining the romance of Chinoiserie bird imagery with a removable tray, sculptural faux-bamboo construction and an unusually rich, color-forward finish.
MAKER AND IDENTIFICATION
The underside retains a partial original John-Richard paper label and a separate “Made in China” country-of-origin label. These surviving labels confirm the maker and place of manufacture.
John-Richard is an American luxury furnishings company known for decorative furniture, lighting, mirrors, artwork and accessories distinguished by specialized finishes, international influences and highly ornamental design.
The original product number is no longer legible on the surviving label. The table has been associated through secondary online identification with model JRA-5674 and the European Crossroads collection; however, neither attribution could be independently verified through an original John-Richard catalog, archived retailer listing or legible factory label. The model and collection are therefore not presented as documented facts in this listing.
The bird is described as a stylized golden pheasant based on its prominent crest, long tail and richly colored plumage. Because the image is decorative rather than ornithologically exact, it may also be understood more generally as a fanciful crested exotic bird.
No identical example of this John-Richard tray table was located among the accessible current and archived market listings reviewed during preparation of this listing. It is presented as a scarce discontinued design rather than as a documented limited edition.
CONSTRUCTION
The table consists of a removable round tray and separate four-legged faux-bamboo stand. Four short black pegs at the top of the stand fit into four corresponding recessed sockets beneath the tray.
The stand is composed of four tapered bamboo-form legs joined by intersecting X-form stretchers with squared central connectors. The base remains stable and structurally sound.

The golden-pheasant composition remains vivid, complete and highly decorative. The extensive craquelure, rubbed coloration, darkened recesses and distressed tonal variation across the golden ground are intentional components of the original antiqued finish rather than later damage. The tray surface displays scattered light scratches, small abrasions and localized paint losses. The carved or molded foliate border and raised gallery rim show rubbing and several small paint chips, including areas where the lighter substrate is visible. The outer edge has additional scuffs and finish wear consistent with handling and use. The faux-bamboo legs and crossed stretchers exhibit visible rubbing, scratches, small finish losses and wear around several simulated bamboo nodes. These imperfections are distributed around the base but do not affect its stability or function. The black-painted underside of the tray displays scattered scuffs, scratches and small finish losses. One prominent, elongated white scratch is present on the underside. This mark is concealed when the tray is positioned normally on its stand and is visible only when the tray is removed and turned upside down. All four upper pegs and corresponding recessed tray sockets remain present and functional. The tray sits securely upon the base and lifts away as intended. The original John-Richard label is partially worn, alongside what appears to be an inventory label. No major cracks, broken legs, failed joints or structural repairs were observed. Please review all photographs closely, particularly the decorated tray surface, raised rim, foliate border, leg and stretcher wear, small paint chips, black underside, large white underside scratch, maker labels and peg-and-socket connections. less
