Elegant matched pair of early 20th century Louis XVI Revival armchairs distinguished by carved oval backs, fluted legs, carved finials, laurel-leaf ornamentation, classical apron details and beautifully shaped open arms.
Believed to date to circa 1900–1920, the chairs were acquired for an antique shop in an earlier green-painted finish and originally had traditional tight upholstered seats. They were subsequently refinished in the present distressed cream coloration and fitted with loose upholstered seat cushions.
The present upholstery features softly muted rose, cream, olive and gold striping accented by subtle damask-patterned panels. Coordinating upholstery appears on the oval backs, arm pads and seat cushions.
The timeworn painted surface gives the pair considerable decorative character and complements the finely carved architectural detailing.
