The large-scale composition depicts two gentlemen seated together in an intimate tavern or café interior. One animated figure raises his glass while his companion reads from a newspaper, creating a wonderfully expressive narrative scene. Bottles, glassware and loosely rendered interior details add to the convivial atmosphere.

Giovanetti’s painterly handling is especially strong throughout the figures, with expressive faces and clothing rendered in a sophisticated palette of muted greens, ochres, creams and warm earth tones. Dramatic passages of light emerge from the darker interior, giving the work a distinctly European character and an appealing Old World quality.
