The … Read more Sculptural antique Japanese ikebana flower basket, or hanakago, handwoven in a rounded jar form from bamboo, cane and rattan. The richly layered construction combines herringbone plaiting, repeated open teardrop loops, horizontal bindings and a tightly woven circular base.

A pair of substantial braided cane or rattan side handles adds visual balance and emphasizes the basket’s robust, architectural form. Its deep brown and warm reddish-brown stained tones have developed an appealing timeworn patina that beautifully highlights the complexity of the handwoven construction.

Likely dating to the late Meiji or Taishō period, this basket would originally have been used as a vessel for Japanese flower arrangements. Today, it presents beautifully as a freestanding sculptural object and complements Japanese, Asian, Organic Modern, Bohemian and Wabi-Sabi interiors. It may also be displayed with dried branches or flowers placed inside a separate watertight container.

Condition: Antique condition with visible age-related wear. There are breaks, losses, splitting and loosened woven elements concentrated around portions of the upper rim, along with scattered surface and finish wear. Despite these imperfections, the body and base remain sturdy, the woven side handles remain attached, and the basket retains its shape and displays beautifully.
