The opposing figures feature wonderfully expressive open-mouthed faces, elaborate stylized manes, dramatically curled tails, and traditional paw-on-ball poses. Each rests upon an architectural plinth embellished with raised decorative borders.

The pair retains a beautifully aged polychrome painted finish in warm rust, burnt orange, black and antique cream. Extensive surface wear and losses to the painted finish reveal layers of color beneath, creating a particularly attractive timeworn patina.

The underside retains an original-style “Made in Japan” label documenting Japanese manufacture.

Designed as a complementary pair, the figures display especially well together and offer substantial sculptural presence. An excellent decorative addition to an entryway, console, mantel, library, or collected interior. See less
