Basquiat Headstrong was devoted to the artist’s depictions of the human head, bringing together works that reveal a more intimate and introspective side of his practice. Many of these drawings, created mainly in oilstick on paper between 1981 and 1983, were works Basquiat chose to keep privately during his lifetime and remained largely unknown to the public.

Unlike preparatory sketches, these heads were conceived as works in their own right, offering a fascinating insight into Basquiat’s artistic development and his exploration of identity, the human figure, and expressive mark-making.

Basquiat remains one of the most influential artists of the late 20th century. His explosive visual language, combining raw drawing, symbolism, text, and cultural references, transformed the boundaries between street art and contemporary art.
