Executed on a petite, organically shaped section of polished natural shell or bone measuring approximately three inches across, the painting rewards close viewing. Four courtly women appear within an ornate palace interior, each individually rendered in richly patterned traditional Thai dress. Their intricate headdresses, jewelry, facial features and layered garments are articulated with remarkably delicate brushwork despite the miniature scale.

The central seated figure is attended by three women arranged around her, creating an intimate ceremonial or court-life scene. Geometric architectural decoration, patterned textiles and finely placed accents of gold, celadon, rose, burgundy and blue give the composition an extraordinary degree of visual depth. The lower portion of the natural support is finished with an incised crosshatched border that subtly echoes the texture of the surrounding silk.

At the lower right, the work bears a painted cursive signature reading “Roong,” followed by two short terminal marks that may read “II” or form part of the artist’s distinctive flourish.
