The vertical composition is dominated by a sculptural Asian elephant with a raised, curling trunk, deeply modeled ears and crisply articulated facial features. Behind the elephant rises a layered temple landscape of pointed chedis, architectural structures and carved rooflines, framed by tropical trees and dense vegetation. A finely incised foliate border encloses the scene.

The carving’s compact scale intensifies its remarkable dimensionality. Deep undercutting around the elephant’s trunk, tusks, ears, head and legs allows the animal to project prominently from the surrounding architecture. The overlapping temple structures and trees recede behind it, creating a convincing sense of foreground, middle distance and background within the shallow wooden panel.

Contrasting carved textures animate the entire composition. Closely spaced incisions define the elephant’s skin and musculature, crosshatched passages suggest woven or timber architectural surfaces, and fine linear cuts articulate leaves, branches, masonry and ornamental details. The elephant’s raised trunk gives the scene an especially lively, auspicious character.

The teak has developed a warm golden-brown patina with visible grain, softly burnished highlights and subtle tonal variation across the raised and recessed surfaces. The relief is mounted to float against a generous cream silk field, creating an elegant contrast between the richly worked wood and quiet textile background.

A streamlined teak frame completes the presentation without competing with the carving. The reverse retains its vintage brass-toned link chain for hanging.
