The vertical composition centers on a revered Asian elephant standing beneath a traditional raised wooden house with steeply pitched rooflines. Above the village scene rises an elaborate temple complex crowned by a bell-shaped chedi, surrounded by palm trees, dense foliage, rugged terrain, and distant mountains. A finely incised foliate border frames the entire scene.

Despite its intimate scale, the panel contains an extraordinary amount of individually worked detail. Deep undercutting around the elephant’s raised trunk, tusks, ears and legs allows the animal to project sculpturally from the surrounding landscape. Layered roofs, temple columns, timber walls and overlapping vegetation create natural shadows that shift as light moves across the carving.

The artisan used contrasting textures to differentiate the composition’s many elements.
