An elegant and generously scaled early-20th-century French Louis XVI-style console, finely carved in giltwood and surmounted by its beautifully shaped marble top. Classical detailing, graceful proportions and the warm, naturally aged gilded surface give the piece exceptional architectural presence. At 61 inches wide, the console is substantial enough to anchor an entry hall, salon, dining room or formal living space.
Acquired from Doyle Auction House, New York, in December 2008. The console remains in good antique condition. One decorative festoon was previously reattached and the marble exhibits minor fine surface scratches consistent with age and use, which could be professionally polished if desired.
A handsome and highly decorative example of the enduring French Louis XVI Revival tradition.
