The New Gallery of British Art: Volume 1 & Volume 2
-Original, published in 1880 by Appleton and Company New York. 37 x 27.5 cm
These books are works of art themselves. With gold painted fore-edges bound by an ornate stamped leather hardcover with gold embellishments, they are sure to be the most beautiful and unique in your rare book collection!
Featuring 121 (in each volume, 242 total) 18th and 19th century works of art by British painters. Many artists are represented such as W.H. Bartlett, Birket Foster, J. Constable, J.E. Millais, Sir Edwin Landseer, Sir Joshua Reynolds, T. Gainsborough, and W. Hogarth.
Each work is beautifully displayed as an engraving on a full page, followed by a full-page description, separated by a thin piece of paper in between to protect the art and the text. Five raised bands to spines. Engraved title pages.
This set is from an estate where they were neatly kept within our family for over ninety years and clearly very well taken care of. You'd be hard-pressed to find both original volumes in such stunning condition.

Not a single fold, crease, tear, stain, spot or fingerprint on any page - it's as if they were put on a shelf immediately after publication and left there for nearly a century and a half. The only indication of age is the very slight wear to a few corners (as pictured). The covers of each volume are mirrored front & back, same design just flipped. You'll see each volume's condition on the back by viewing the photos of the covers that show the spine on the right (photos #17 and #18). less
