A magnificent specimen of historic European hand-hammered brass metalwork. Forged from heavy, substantial solid brass, the age-related variable thickness is evident in the box walls. It features a classic three-compartment interior designed specifically for the ritual of Georgian-era correspondence. The leftmost section, accessed via an oversized, decorative strapwork double-hinged lid with an elegant arrow-and-scallop detail, was sized to safely store delicate goose quill pens and specialized pen knives. The open middle and rightmost chambers natively housed individual glass inkwells and signet seal rings. Retaining its beautifully weathered, golden-brown, originally hand-hammered surface patina and honest signs of historic daily utility, this rare artifact acts as a tactile bridge to centuries of written history.
