Unearthed in Canterbury, England in 1938, the original sundial was used by monks to mark the hours of their services, earning its reputation as “The Oldest Watch in the World.”

This beautifully detailed silver-toned plate is topped by a gold-toned trapezoidal panel, richly decorated with raised rope and floral motifs. The sundial bar is made of solid, heavy brass and iron, giving the piece a substantial feel. The set includes a gold-tone chain and a writing pen featuring a sculpted dog’s head clutching a bone, which connects to the loop of the chain. The sundial measures 4 inches long and 1.25 inches wide, with a total weight of 9 ounces. To use the sundial, the pin is inserted into the hole corresponding to the month, and the tablet is held freely, facing the sun. As the shadow falls along the column, the time can be read based on the markings. The edges of the sundial are inscribed in Latin with the phrases:
