The medallion rests on an elegant ivory ground delicately patterned with a repeating floral motif — the fine interior patterning of the field that is one of the most distinctive and admired qualities of the Senneh kilim tradition. An ivory border accented with stylized designs in red and blue frames the composition with harmonious balance. Senneh rugs, woven in the Kurdish city of Sanandaj (historically known as Senneh) in the Kurdistan province of Western Persia, are among the most technically refined and artistically distinguished rugs in the entire Persian tribal and village canon. Senneh is celebrated for producing rugs and kilims of extraordinary fineness — with knot counts rivaling the great urban workshop traditions — worked in a wool of remarkable silky softness and luster.
