This finely knotted piece features an intricate allover paisley pattern rendered in harmonious tones of pale latte, chocolate brown, and French blue — an unusual and sophisticated palette that gives this piece a cool, refined elegance quite distinct from the more typical red-field Senneh production. The central medallion, set against a rich chocolate field, is framed by a beautifully balanced French blue border of quiet authority. Senneh rugs, woven in the Kurdish city of Sanandaj (historically known as Senneh) in the Kurdistan province of Western Persia, are among the most technically refined and artistically distinguished rugs in the entire Persian tribal and village canon. Senneh is celebrated for producing rugs and kilims of extraordinary fineness — with knot counts rivaling the great urban workshop traditions — worked in a wool of remarkable silky softness and luster. The Senneh kilim, in particular, is considered one of the great masterworks of Persian flatweave weaving, and room-size examples are extraordinarily rare and highly prized by collectors worldwide.
