A wonderfully sculptural vintage porcelain Peony Dish by Chelsea House, the North Carolina design house celebrated for historically informed furnishings and decorative accessories created for the professional interior-design trade.
The composition centers an exuberant peony blossom modeled in deeply layered tiers of softly scalloped petals. Expressive hand-painted strokes in blush pink, rose, warm yellow, and ivory articulate the individual petals, while overlapping botanical leaves introduce nuanced shades of moss, olive, and celadon green. A modeled vine-like stem curves above the flower to form an integrated openwork handle, giving the piece a particularly distinctive silhouette.
More than an ordinary decorative plate, this is a true decorator’s object: dimensional, colorful and substantial enough to command attention among genuine antiques. The interplay of sculpted porcelain, painterly color and glossy glaze allows it to read almost as a botanical relief sculpture when displayed upright.
The design closely follows the celebrated Peony Dish produced by England’s Chelsea porcelain manufactory circa 1755–1760. Historical examples share the same essential architecture—a naturalistically modeled flower blossom beneath overlapping leaves with a curved openwork branch handle. Chelsea House reinterpreted that important 18th-century English form for the late-20th-century decorative-arts market, preserving its unmistakable botanical silhouette while giving it a richly glazed, highly expressive finish.
Founded in 1974, Chelsea House has long served interior designers and luxury retailers with furniture, lighting and accessories grounded in classical English and European design. Its pieces are known for translating historic forms into distinctive statement objects suited to sophisticated, layered interiors.
For a designer, this is the sort of finishing piece that gives a room personality. Display it upright on a substantial easel atop a dining-room sideboard, library console, antique chest or skirted table; place it within a glass-front china cabinet; or layer it into a collected arrangement of botanical artwork, porcelain and antique books. Its strong dimensional profile also makes it an especially compelling focal point within a traditional plate display.
The lush peony and painterly pink-and-green palette feel perfectly at home in a grandmillennial dining room, English-country sitting room or Nancy Meyers–inspired kitchen. Paired with mahogany, chinoiserie porcelain, tartan, faded florals, antique botanical prints or well-worn leather, it also captures the layered old-estate sensibility associated with the Ralph Lauren Home aesthetic.
Although its bold botanical modeling and luminous polychrome glazes recall Victorian majolica, the piece is more accurately described as a porcelain interpretation of an earlier 18th-century Chelsea design rather than antique English majolica.
The reverse bears the Chelsea House script factory mark. Intended for decorative display.
DESIGNER NOTE
This historically inspired Chelsea House Peony Dish offers the color and sculptural presence designers seek when building a room that feels collected rather than coordinated. Its 18th-century English reference, dimensional botanical form and expressive pink-and-green palette make it especially compelling in English-country, grandmillennial, old-estate and Ralph Lauren–inspired interiors.

The dimensional petals, overlapping leaves, and openwork vine handle remain intact. The hand-painted decoration retains strong color, and the glossy glaze remains bright and lustrous. Minor variations in the brushwork, glaze pooling and surface texture are inherent to the molded and hand-finished production. Light contact wear is present around the underside foot, consistent with careful display and handling. Please review all photographs closely for the exact condition.
