The Classical patterns shown are created using marquetry and stringing,

On the far-left drawer panel, the circular design is called a fan patera or conch shell motif. In traditional woodworking, this is created using a technique called sand shading, where individual pieces of wood veneer are dipped into hot sand to scorch the edges. This shading creates a realistic, three-dimensional depth mimicking a fan or shell.

~ The Guilloche or Scrolling Vine (Drawer Fronts)
The fluid, wave-like pattern decorating the main drawer face is a scrolling vine motif or guilloche pattern featuring delicate flowerheads at each intersection. Because it uses curving, natural forms, it is specifically classified as marquetry rather than parquetry (which only uses straight geometric shapes).

Captain Nicholas Biddle was born in Philadelphia in 1750. He first went to sea at age 13 and briefly served as a midshipman in the Royal Navy. Biddle, however, sided with the cause for American independence and was appointed one of the first captains of the American Navy. As part of Commodore Esek Hopkins’ squadron, he participated in the expedition to New Providence Island in 1776, as well as raids along the Canadian coast. Biddle assumed command of the newly constructed frigate Randolph (32 guns) in 1777 and sailed in pursuit of British shipping. On March 7, 1778, while convoying merchant vessels off the coast of Barbados, Biddle engaged the larger, 64-gun British warship Yarmouth. During the battle, Biddle was wounded and directly after, Randolph unexpectedly exploded. Only 4 crewmen out of 315 survived; Biddle did not. The destruction of Randolph with nearly all of its crew was the greatest loss of life in battle for the American Navy until the sinking of the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor in 1941.
