An impressive Chinese red-lacquered wood pantry or kitchen cabinet, believed to date to the early 20th century. Substantial in scale and richly decorated, the cabinet combines traditional storage features with a beautifully aged painted surface and extensive gilt decoration.
The upper doors display a continuous hand-painted landscape composed of mountain peaks, waterways, pavilions, trees, figures, and small boats. Gilt calligraphy bordering the scene appears to reproduce the traditional Chinese couplet:
“近水樓台先得月”
“A pavilion close to the water is the first to receive the moon.”
“向陽花木早逢春”
“Flowers and trees facing the sun are the first to welcome spring.”
Together, the verses traditionally express favorable opportunity, renewal, and prosperity.
Below the upper doors are three drawers decorated with gilt-painted bamboo. The lower section incorporates turned wooden spindles, a slatted interior deck, and sliding panels carved with geometric Double Happiness motifs. These open elements would have permitted air to circulate through the cabinet when used for household storage.
Visible construction details include framed floating panels, exposed through-tenons, wooden pegs, pivoting doors, and traditional-style joinery. The cabinet retains aged brass-colored faceplates and drop-ring pulls with naturally developed patina. Its sides and back have a darker, more utilitarian finish that contrasts with the highly decorated red facade.
Offering generous interior storage and commanding architectural presence, the cabinet could be used as a pantry, linen press, bar cabinet, dining-room storage piece, or distinctive focal point in a collected interior.
The precise date, regional origin, wood species, and original household use have not been independently authenticated. The stated age and origin are based on the cabinet’s visible construction, materials, decorative treatment, and information available to the seller.

The red-lacquered surface displays rubbing, marks, finish variation, and naturally developed patina. The gilt-painted landscape, calligraphy, and bamboo decoration remain clearly visible, with localized fading and friction wear, particularly around the hardware. Age-related shrinkage lines and separation are visible where the floating wood panels meet their frames. Minor joint separation is present along portions of the lower molded leg spandrels. A small rectangular chip is present at the front-right corner of the top panel, exposing a small area of the underlying wood. The left side has subtle age-related surface lines that have darkened with the surrounding finish. On the middle-right portion of the facade, the wood paneling below the upper cabinet doors displays several short linear scratches, abrasions, or shallow gouges. These marks appear consistent with scratching or repeated contact and rubbing against another object; their exact cause is unknown. The brass-colored hardware displays oxidation and naturally developed patina. The cabinet has not been refinished or cosmetically restored by the current seller. Please review all photographs carefully, including close-up images of the described wear. less
