The hinged lid is emblazoned with a pair of crossed oars beneath the date, accented by a finely painted ornamental flourish, suggesting an association with rowing, a sporting club, or commemorative presentation. The façade is particularly graphic, centered by a crowned rampant-lion armorial shield flanked by wonderfully rendered fantastical birds or heraldic creatures entwined with serpentine forms, all painted in a restrained palette of silver-white, ochre, gold and muted green. Stylized tree-stump motifs complete the composition.
