Likely French in origin and made for or imported into the English market, the box combines dramatic design, precious materials, and remarkably fine craftsmanship to create a piece of extraordinary decorative presence.

The exterior is particularly striking, with a rich ebonized wood ground extensively inlaid with brass metal. Elaborate scrolling foliate and arabesque-inspired motifs cover the lid and continue across the front and sides, creating a magnificent contrast between the warm golden brass and deep black surface. The density, symmetry, and precision of the decoration give the box the appearance of a much more elaborate cabinetmaking object despite its intimate scale. This style of contrasting brass against dark wood has strong associations with sophisticated French luxury cabinetmaking and Boulle-inspired decorative traditions.

Opening the box reveals an equally impressive interior. The fitted compartment retains a sumptuous rich burgundy velvet lining, providing a dramatic backdrop for its surviving crystal accessories. Included are two crystal scent or perfume bottles and a coordinating crystal box, each beautifully finished with an English sterling silver lid. The silver box lid is fully hallmarked and dates to 1845, providing an important period reference for the ensemble and placing it firmly within the early Victorian era.

The survival of these fitted accessories is especially desirable. Dressing and vanity boxes were highly personal luxury possessions, designed to organize the toiletries and grooming necessities of a fashionable lady while traveling or within the private dressing room. Over nearly two centuries, their individual bottles, jars, implements, and fittings were frequently lost or separated, making an example retaining multiple period components considerably more compelling. The juxtaposition of French-style brass-inlaid cabinet work with English hallmarked sterling silver fittings also makes this piece particularly interesting. It reflects the cosmopolitan nature of luxury goods in 19th-century Britain, when fashionable objects and specialist craftsmanship moved readily between Paris, London, and other European centers.

The box measures approximately 7.25 inches wide, 5.25 inches deep, and 4 inches high—compact enough for an elegant dressing table while possessing tremendous visual presence. The box has a few small losses. One of the bottles has a crack and loss to the the rim with glass stopper stuck in place. One of the silver bottle lids is indented. The crystal box has some chips and losses to the sides. The weight of all three silver lids is 61 grams. The bottles measure approximately 3.5 inches high, 1.75 inches wide and 1.25 inches deep. The crystal box measures 3 inches wide, 2 inches deep and 1.25 inches high. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
