Original hand-colored aquatint titled "Badger Catching," a plate from Henry Alken's celebrated "The National Sports of Great Britain" (London, published for Thomas McLean, first issued 1820–1821).
Henry Thomas Alken (1785–1851) was the definitive sporting artist of his day. This moonlit night scene, with a sportsman and dogs digging out a badger in a shadowy landscape, is a genuine period aquatint, roughly 200 years old, with hand-coloring in the traditional manner. One of the oldest and most collectible categories of English field-sports print, presented in a wood frame with a cream French-line mat.
The frame measures 22" W x 18.5" H x 1" D. The aquatint measures 15" W x 12" H.
Some significant toning and foxing to the sheet consistent with its age (see photos). This is an original print for 1821 and looks better than most things made in 1821! If you are looking for a vintage look for an office, study, library, or man cave, this is a unique piece to consider.

Overall it is still in quite good shape for being a 200+ year old piece of paper. The frame has some wear consistent with its age. I do not know when it was framed but an educated guess would be in the 1950s or 1960s. The frame has not been altered since then as far as I know. less
