This fine brace-back, nine-spindle continuous arm Windsor chair is stamped "I SPROSEN" on the underside of the seat, identifying it as the work of early American chairmaker John M. Sprosen. Sprosen was a prominent, documented master chairmaker who was active in Philadelphia from 1783 to 1786 and then in New York from 1789-1798.
A continuous-arm brace-back Windsor chair is the crown jewel of 18th-century Windsor styles. Known for its elegant, single continuous piece of steam-bent wood that forms both the back bow and the arms, this specific form represents the peak of early American chairmaking complexity. This Sprosen chair is an elegant, well-preserved example of the style.
