This 1970s multiple, titled "Rainbow Banner," is an authentic color screenprint executed directly onto a heavy, woven textile canvas. The design features a bold, sweeping color spectrum set against a deep plum background. Published by Germany's avant-garde Rosenthal Studio-Line in a limited edition of 2,000 copies, this work serves as a residential-scale extension of Piene's monumental "Sky Art" philosophy. Most notably, it channels the graphic form of his historic 600-meter helium-filled "Olympic Rainbow" engineered for the closing ceremony of the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.
Otto Piene (1928–2014) was a prominent figure of the post-war European avant-garde and a co-founder of the influential German ZERO Movement. Alongside Heinz Mack and Günther Uecker, Piene sought to reset art history to a "zero point" by abandoning traditional paint in favor of pure light, smoke, and environmental space. He later served as the director of the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS) at MIT. Today, his pioneering works are held in premier permanent collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and the Tate Modern in London.
The piece is housed in a period-correct, high-polished chrome edge frame that reflects its 1970s production era. Piene’s authorized stamp signature is clearly visible within an oval ring in the lower right corner of the fabric canvas. This framed multi-media work stands as a verified, documented collaboration between a leading figure of post-war kinetic art and one of Germany's most significant mid-century design publishers.
