An enchanting early 20th-century work by American illustrator Charles Kendall Manning, titled Lady at Sunset, presented in its beautifully aged period gilt frame.
Dating to approximately the 1920s, the composition captures an elegantly dressed woman standing within a lush garden overlooking a luminous mountain lake at sunset. Framed by monumental trees, flowering foliage and classical garden elements, the figure gazes across the water as brilliant golden light breaks through the distant landscape and reflects across the lake.
Manning's romantic imagery belongs to the golden age of American decorative illustration, when richly colored pictorial prints brought idealized landscapes, glamorous figures and dreamlike settings into fashionable interiors.
The extraordinary horizontal format gives Lady at Sunset an almost cinematic quality. Deep greens and shadowed foliage frame the composition while warm amber, gold and rose tones illuminate the distant horizon, directing the viewer's eye toward the solitary female figure.
The work is identified as “Lady at Sunset” by Charles Kendall Manning, an image documented in the secondary auction market under the artist's name. Other large framed Manning prints have likewise been catalogued as works dating to the 1920s.
Particularly appealing is its surviving period presentation. The print remains housed beneath glass in an elaborate molded gilt frame featuring repeating classical ornament and a wonderfully aged surface. Rather than detracting from the piece, the accumulated patina and areas of finish wear give the frame the unmistakable character of an artwork that has survived approximately a century.
At an impressive 32.5 inches wide, Lady at Sunset has substantial decorative presence while retaining the romantic intimacy of the original composition. It would be especially striking above a credenza, console, fireplace or bed.
