This piece is an antique primitive lift-top commode/washstand. The piece is an excellent example of primitive living, bringing history to any bathroom, living area or bedroom. The original use was for the water bowl and pitcher to rest on the top surface, while towels or soap could be housed in the drawer and the chamber pot would reside inside the bottom compartment. This has been in my family for many years and was used primarily for storage.
The commode is from the "Cottage Furniture" Era from 1870-1890. Although the wood is not confirmed, it is suspected to be made of pine. The piece measures approximately 29" wide, 20" high and 18 inches deep.
