Standing an impressive 72 inches tall, this substantial screen features four hinged panels, each measuring 16 inches wide, with a rich black lacquered ground and elaborate traditional Asian imagery.

The decoration is not merely surface-painted. The designs have dimensional, embossed and incised or carved detailing worked into the panels, creating wonderful texture and depth characteristic of Coromandel-style decorative work.

One side features an elaborate bird and botanical composition with long-tailed birds surrounded by flowering branches, trees and lush foliage. The reverse features an entirely different traditional Asian scene incorporating figures, garden elements and architectural motifs. Decorative borders frame the individual panels.

The screen retains its brass-tone metal hinges as well as brass metal fittings at the feet, all of which remain intact. The four hinged panels can be positioned at varying angles depending on the space and desired overall width.

No manufacturer’s label or maker’s mark was found. Because the maker and exact country of manufacture are unknown, the screen is conservatively described as Asian rather than specifically Chinese or Japanese.

The Coromandel-style construction, black lacquer finish, dimensional decoration and overall design are consistent with decorative folding screens produced during the mid-20th century.

A beautiful statement piece that would work wonderfully as a room divider, decorative backdrop, bedroom screen or large-scale architectural accent.
