His characteristically … Read more A wonderfully expressive late-20th-century Chinese wood carving depicting Shou Lao, or Shouxing, the traditional Chinese God of Longevity.

His characteristically high rounded forehead, gently smiling expression and exceptionally long flowing beard are rendered in deeply carved wood, giving the piece an almost sculptural presence when hung on the wall. Inset eyes and teeth add another layer of detail to the carving.

The rich reddish-brown finish shows attractive variation across the wood, with darker tones settling naturally into the carved beard and facial features.

Of particular interest is the original Yue Hwa Chinese Products label retained on the reverse. Founded in Hong Kong in 1959, Yue Hwa became known for traditional Chinese goods, decorative arts and handicrafts. The original retail label provides a nice piece of provenance rarely retained on decorative carvings of this type.

Dating to the late 20th century, circa 1970s–1990s.

The substantial carving projects roughly three inches from the wall, giving it considerably more dimension than a conventional flat plaque. Original metal hanging hardware remains mounted on the reverse.

Vintage condition with minor surface marks and natural finish variation consistent with age. No major cracks or repairs noted. Original paper retail label remains on the reverse.
