Rare, Frank Matranga Ceramic figure of a mother and her children and is 7" tall. Much of Frank Matranga's work that you find for sale are pots or dishes. This is a rare work and is a charming depiction of a mother holding her two children. It is on a wooden base and has the iconic Matranga signature on the back of the piece. It has a wonderful blue and blue-green glaze with the children highlighted in a white glaze. It is in wonderful condition.
Frank Matranga (1935–2016) was a prominent California ceramic artist and sculptor best known for his monumental public murals and contribution to the American Studio Pottery Movement. Over a career spanning several decades, he created over 50 large-scale public ceramic mural commissions for libraries, civic buildings, corporate offices, and private homes.
Life and Career
Education: He earned his BA and MA from California State University, Los Angeles and completed advanced studies under famed ceramicist Carlton Ball at the University of Southern California. He also studied under Otto and Vivika Heino.
Teaching: He established his first studio in Redondo Beach in 1961 (later moving to Manhattan Beach) and taught ceramics within the Los Angeles Community College system for 20 years.
International Acclaim: He served as an artist-in-residence in Japan during 1977 and 1979, exhibiting at the American Embassy Gallery in Tokyo. His work was also showcased in Germany and Australia
