This exceptional 1882 English sterling silver and hand-cut crystal match holder is a superb example of late Victorian craftsmanship, combining substantial weight with brilliant decorative detail. The heavy crystal body is beautifully cut with deeply ribbed, fluted sides, culminating in a striking radiating sunburst-style base that captures and refracts the light wonderfully from every angle.
The crystal is finished with a substantial English sterling silver collar, fully hallmarked and dating to 1882. An elegant engine-turned surface adds texture and refinement to the silver, creating a handsome contrast against the clarity and brilliance of the crystal. The thick, hand-cut construction gives the piece an impressive sense of quality rarely encountered in smaller desk accessories.
Measuring approximately 2.5 inches high, 3.75 inches wide, and 3.75 inches deep, the piece weighs an impressive 1 pound 5 ounces, reflecting the exceptionally thick and heavy quality of the crystal. Good antique condition, on close inspection there are numerous edge chips to the body and base. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Originally intended as a match holder, this handsome Victorian piece would make a distinctive addition to a gentleman's desk, bar, library, or collection of English silver and tobacciana. Its combination of sparkling crystal, beautifully worked sterling silver, and substantial proportions gives it tremendous decorative presence despite its compact size. A sophisticated and highly decorative survivor from Victorian England, equally appealing as a functional match holder or simply displayed as a beautiful antique object.
