This captivating antique French oil painting presents a wonderfully atmospheric day at the racecourse, capturing horses and their jockeys as they prepare before the race. Set against a sweeping green field beneath a luminous blue sky, the composition is alive with color and movement, offering an evocative glimpse into the elegant sporting culture of Belle Époque France.
The artist skillfully combines the loose, light-filled qualities of Impressionism with more precise realist detail, particularly in the central horses and jockeys. Brilliant racing silks in red, blue, white, and black punctuate the verdant landscape, while spectators and additional figures recede into the distance. The horses are especially appealing, each individually modeled with expressive posture and beautifully observed color. The painting is artist signed in the lower left corner, adding further interest to this accomplished sporting work.
Of particular note, the reverse of the canvas retains an art exhibition label dated 1905, providing an intriguing period connection and helping place the painting firmly within the early 20th century. The painting has been professionally reframed more recently in an elegant gold-gilt wood frame with subtle textured detailing. A wide inner cream cloth liner creates additional depth and provides a sophisticated visual transition between the colorful painting and warm gilt frame. The presentation is handsome and substantial, allowing the artwork to make an immediate statement on the wall.
Overall, the framed work measures approximately 29.5 inches wide, 23 inches high, and 1.75 inches deep. The visible painting measures approximately 21.25 inches wide by 14.75 inches high. Good antique condition with light signs of age related wear/craquelure to the canvas. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
With its desirable horse racing subject, French country setting, vivid palette, artist signature, and remarkable 1905 exhibition label, this is a particularly appealing piece of antique equestrian art. It would be equally at home in an English Country or French Country interior, traditional library, sporting collection, or layered equestrian-inspired gallery wall.
