Description
A striking large-scale Egyptmn Revival portrait painting depicting an elegantly dressed seated woman against an elaborate ancient Egyptian-inspired interior and landscape. Rich with architectural details, stylized lotus motifs, figures, animals, hieroglyphic-inspired imagery, and a dramatic Nile-era scene in the background, this is a wonderfully atmospheric statement piece.
The central figure is beautifully rendered in a softly draped white garment with layered jewelry, bracelets, and a decorative headband. Her naturalistic portraiture creates an intriguing contrast with the more stylized Egyptian imagery surrounding her. The palette of muted turquoise, blue, terracotta, ivory, and deep green gives the painting an especially distinctive, almost dreamlike quality.
The painting is executed on stretched canvas and bears a hand-painted signature at the lower right. The artist has not been identified, and the work is therefore being offered as an unsigned/artist-unattributed decorative painting rather than with a specific attribution.
Perhaps as impressive as the painting itself is its exceptionally substantial, deeply ornamented frame. Finished in rich antique-gold tones with darker recessed areas, the frame features exuberant scrolling foliage, floral and shell-like ornament, and extensive high-relief decoration. Its oversized proportions give the entire piece a dramatic, almost theatrical presence.
The piece measures approximately 48 inches high by 36 inches wide overall and makes a significant statement on a wall. Due to its scale and elaborate frame, it is particularly well suited to a large entryway, dining room, living room, library, boutique hotel, restaurant, or other interior where a dramatic focal point is desired.
This painting has personal history as well. It hung for many years in my aunt’s home, where I always loved it, and it eventually came to me. I would happily keep it, but apartment living in New York City simply doesn’t give me enough wall space to display a piece of this scale properly. I hope it finds a new home where it can once again be enjoyed as the centerpiece it deserves to be.
