An exceptional late 18th-century English George III mule chest, expertly crafted in
oak with richly figured mahogany drawer fronts (attributed). Combining the utility
of a traditional coffer with the functionality of a chest of drawers, this substantial
piece features a hinged lift-top that opens to a generous storage compartment
above nine graduated drawers.
The rectangular top is formed from wide oak boards and opens on iron strap hinges
to reveal the original storage well, a hallmark of the English mule chest. Below, the
façade is arranged with nine drawers in a balanced three-over-three-over-three
configuration, each retaining brass swan-neck bail pulls mounted on decorative
backplates with matching brass escutcheons. A working lock remains centered
beneath the lid.
The warm patina of the oak case contrasts beautifully with the mahogany drawer
fronts, showcasing over two centuries of natural aging. Clean, restrained lines and
well-proportioned construction reflect the practical elegance characteristic of the
George III period. The chest stands on shaped bracket feet, completing its
architectural silhouette.
