In the foreground, a seated gentleman plays the violin while his companion, standing beside him, raises a glass of wine and holds a large jug.

The costumes, with their wide collars, feathered hats, and boots, evoke the world of musketeers and genre scenes of the Grand Siècle (the 17th century).

The composition, particularly vibrant, is enriched with numerous details: furniture, rugs, tableware, and secondary figures appearing on the staircase.

The work bears a signature in the lower left corner, "E. …" (to be deciphered), followed by the inscription "after Roybet."

It thus belongs to the tradition of compositions by Ferdinand Roybet (1840-1920), a French painter particularly appreciated for his genre scenes featuring musketeers and gentlemen of the 17th and 18th centuries.
