An exceptional signed and numbered original lithograph by internationally collected Vietnamese-French modernist Hoi Lebadang, combining atmospheric abstraction, expressive figuration and the artist's recurring exploration of the natural world.

Executed in a sophisticated palette of turquoise, teal, aquamarine, black, ivory, ochre and touches of coral, the composition emerges through layers of painterly color and gestural black line. Figures and organic forms appear almost suspended within the atmospheric landscape, while delicate branch-like passages dissolve into broad areas of color and texture.

The resulting image occupies the fascinating territory between landscape, figuration and abstraction that became central to Lebadang's mature work.

Hand-signed in pencil by Lebadang at lower right and individually numbered 41/125 at lower left.

Particularly noteworthy is the surviving Collectors' Guild Ltd. authentication label on the verso, which identifies the work as an exclusively commissioned original lithograph. According to the original label, the edition was strictly limited to 125 numbered impressions plus 25 artist's proofs, with impressions pulled under the artist's supervision.

The relatively small edition is notable within Lebadang's graphic oeuvre. His important 1968 Les Chevaux portfolio was likewise issued in an edition of 125, during a pivotal period in which the artist was pushing conventional printmaking beyond straightforward lithography and experimenting with relief, engraving, embossing and increasingly complex surfaces.

Lebadang first encountered lithography in Paris in 1958, working around Arts-Litho and regularly visiting the celebrated printmaking studios of Fernand Mourlot and Jacques Desjobert. By 1970 his printmaking practice had expanded considerably, and the workshop of Bernard Rémusat in Mougins became an important experimental setting for his prints.

His work from this period frequently combines Western postwar abstraction with imagery and compositional ideas rooted in his Vietnamese heritage. Human figures, horses, trees, boats and expansive landscapes emerge and disappear within fields of color rather than being rendered conventionally.

The present lithograph is an especially attractive example of this aesthetic, with the turquoise-dominated palette giving the composition a remarkable depth and almost dreamlike quality.

Presented in what appears to be its vintage presentation beneath glass, with a wide warm-neutral mat and slender gold-tone frame.

Condition: Very good vintage condition consistent with age. Artwork presents beautifully beneath glass.
