This is an authentic Netilat Yadayim (Hand Washing) cup, traditionally used for the ritual washing of hands (Negel Vasser) in Jewish observant homes. The vessel features a classic tapered body with a flared rim and a weighted pedestal base. It is designed with the traditional dual-handle configuration, allowing the user to pour water over each hand without the unwashed hand touching the water source.
The front is hand-engraved with a large, stylized floral medallion—likely a sunflower or rosette—flanked by foliate scrolls. Above the floral motif, the Hebrew inscription "נטילת ידיים" (Netilat Yadayim) is deeply engraved in a traditional serif script. The brass shows a wonderful, rich natural oxidation and a hammered texture consistent with 19th-century metalwork.
Note on Rarity: Unlike standard antique lavers which are often plain or minimally decorated, this example features a high level of artistic "chasing" (hand-engraving). The central floral rosette and foliate scrolls are characteristic of the mid-to-late 19th-century Eastern European style. Most importantly, the inclusion of the Hebrew "נטילת ידיים" (Netilat Yadayim) indicates this was a prized piece of household ritual silver-substitute, intended to be displayed prominently in a Jewish home.
