A beautiful vintage Soviet-era Russian Kubachi two-handled candy or sugar bowl, handcrafted in 875 silver and richly decorated with traditional niello work and a warm gilt interior.
The bowl features intricate pierced openwork with scrolling floral and foliate motifs, highlighted by the dramatic contrast of black niello against the silver. The interior is finished in gold-toned gilding, giving the piece an especially elegant appearance. Graceful twin handles complete the sculptural form.
The piece is hallmarked 875 silver and bears the distinctive Soviet hammer and sickle within a five-pointed star assay mark, identifying it as Soviet-era silver produced after the introduction of this hallmark in 1958.
Kubachi, located in Dagestan, is renowned for its centuries-old tradition of master silversmithing, engraving, niello decoration, and ornamental metalwork. This bowl is a wonderful example of that highly decorative Russian craft tradition.
Originally intended as a sugar, candy, bonbon, or nut bowl, it also makes a striking decorative object displayed in a dining room, bar, library, curio cabinet, or collected tabletop.
