This composition was assembled circa 2014 from pieces acquired through Roche Bobois and 1stDibs.

The complete 15-element composition includes:

10 seat cushions
3 straight backrests
2 corner pieces

The upholstery is an eclectic mix of rich jewel-toned velvets and textured fabrics in deep teal, purple, pink, pale blue, orange, and chartreuse, punctuated by exuberant multicolor floral Missoni upholstery. The floral pieces retain Missoni identification; the remaining pieces are labeled Roche Bobois without additional designer attribution.

One of the defining characteristics of Hans Hopfer's Mah Jong is its extraordinary modularity. The 15 individual elements can be rearranged into numerous configurations—from a traditional low sectional to an expansive lounge or conversation pit, chaise-style seating, or separate floor cushions. The photographs show several possible arrangements as well as the individual seat cushions laid out separately.

Condition

This is a pre-owned circa-2014 composition that has been used and enjoyed and is being offered in used vintage condition, with visible wear and imperfections.

The upholstery shows fading and color variation, wear and changes to the velvet pile, localized staining and discoloration, surface marks, and other signs of age and use. Certain teal and pale blue pieces show more pronounced discoloration and pile wear, and other modules have localized marks and fading.

Despite the cosmetic wear, the collection remains a striking and highly versatile example of the iconic Mah Jong design. Its combination of jewel-toned Roche Bobois upholstery and documented Missoni floral textiles gives this particular composition a wonderfully eclectic, collected character.
