Pair of large hand-painted Portuguese ceramic ewers attributed by their marks to J. Leonardo. Both pieces are marked on the underside with variations including “J. Leonardo,” “Hand-Painted,” “Portugal,” and numerical inscriptions including “1871” and “1873."
Each approximately 15 inches tall, the ewers feature elaborate reticulated or pierced bodies, elongated loop handles, flared mouths, and pedestal bases.
The openwork ceramic forms are decorated throughout with colorful hand-painted floral motifs in teal, pink, green, yellow, and black against a light ground. Their symmetrical form and intricate pierced construction give the pair a strong decorative presence.
A substantial matching pair well suited to traditional, Mediterranean, maximalist, or grandmillennial interiors.
