Impressive large-scale antique painting on board titled “Blanchefleur – Abbey,” depicting a dramatic medieval scene with a seated noblewoman and attendant figures within an atmospheric architectural interior.
Presented in a substantial period wood frame with warm burl-toned banding and dark wood molding. A brass plaque mounted to the frame reads “BLANCHEFLEUR – ABBEY / PRESENTED BY THE CLASS OF 1928,” providing an unusual historical connection and dating the presentation of the work to 1928.
The painting measures an impressive approximately 59" W × 48" H framed, giving it tremendous presence as a statement piece for a library, study, dining room or traditional interior.
The painting is executed on rigid board/panel rather than canvas. It shows considerable age-related wear, including areas of surface loss, cracking, flaking and deterioration, as shown in the photographs. The frame also exhibits wear and losses consistent with age. The paper dust cover on the reverse is torn and partially missing. Sold in as-found antique condition.
Artist and exact origin are currently unknown. Based on the presentation plaque, the artwork dates to 1928 or earlier.
