An original work by Belgian-born artist Marc Lambrechts (b. 1955), executed in oil and asphalt on plaster over a wood and metal support, measuring 105 x 105cm - a scale that matches several of his most collected large- format works.
Lambrechts trained in printmaking at the Higher Saint-Lucas Institute in Brussels before relocating to New York City in 1993, where he began painting and quickly drew attention, culminating in his celebrated solo debut at Tibor de Nagy Gallery. He now divides his time between Brooklyn and southern France. His work is held in institutional and corporate collections including the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art and the David and Lucille Packard Foundation.
This piece exemplifies the layered, material drive. Process he’s known for: built up in plaster, worked with oil and asphalt, and mounted to wood and metal, the surface carries real physical depth and texture rather than flat paint on canvas. The result is richly worn, almost archaeological quality - abstract composition with the gravity of an artifact. Lambrechts’ recurring themes of time, cosmos, and the passage of energy through matter come through the in the asphalt’s dark, weathered tone against the pale ground of the plaster.
At this scale and with this materiality, it reads as a genuine statement piece- substantial enough to anchor a room, textured enough to hold attention up close.
Regrettable sale as moving and no longer have the right space to do it justice.
