These paintings … Read more Like many Swedish modernist painters Waldemar Berg bridged early 20th-century color expressionism with emerging abstract and informal art. These paintings represented a shift away from traditional, realistic depictions focusing instead on emotion, spontaneity, and the essence of the subject rather than exact likeness. Emerging in the 1940s-50s as a reaction to postwar anxiety, "Art Informel" (informal art) pioneered a highly gestural, spontaneous style, by using color, texture, and form to convey subjectivity.

Waldemar Berg was born in 1899 with an unknown date of death. He spent many years painting in Juniskär, a quaint Swedish seaside retreat where he earned the nickname of "Juniskar's Picasso". Like many artists he interrupted his creative solitude and traveled to Southern Europe, specifically France, Italy, and Spain. These settings rejuvenated many artists post-WWII by offering brilliant, natural light, rich color palettes, and ancient, romantic scenery that contrasted with wartime trauma.

Influenced by these new surrounding this floral painting captures the artist's shift toward a Mediterranean-inspired European modernism, characterized by a mix of color, pattern and emotion. We see a lush bouquet of blooming pink flowers arranged tightly in a glass vase. The roundness of the petals echoes the structural, grid-like pattern etched onto the clear vase.

There is a bold contrast between warm and cool tones. Deep teal and sapphire blues dominate the background and tabletop, pushing the delicate, soft pink tones of the blossoms forward. Thick, confident, loose brushstrokes, typical of European Modernism, gives the canvas physical texture, allowing light to catch the ridges of the paint.

The painting is signed "Waldemar Berg" in the lower right corner. This oil on stretched canvas measures 16 and 1/2 inches wide by 23 and 1/4 inches high framed to a size 20 inches wide by 26 and 3/4 inches high .
The painting is in very good to near perfect condition. The canvas is tight, intact and without repairs. It is framed in a vintage two-toned wooden frame that is in very good condition with minimal handling wear. There is updated hanging hardware on the back. When I discover artists like Waldemar Berg and I see their body of work I am grateful to see paintings like this one that has been well maintained over the years. What a lovely way to honor an artists legacy, especially one who died in obscurity.

Although this painting is undated, based on the artist's career, signature style, and similar listed works, it is estimated to have been created during the mid-20th century (typically from the late 1940s through the 1960s.)

This vibrant still life floral feels like the flowers were just freshly picked from a garden and tells a story of an artists journey defined by creative obsession, deep introspection, and a commitment to authenticity over stability.
