The poster advertises Edmond Lepelletier’s serialized novel Madame Sans-Gêne, adapted from the celebrated play by Victorien Sardou and Émile Moreau. The theatrical composition depicts the elegantly dressed title character in a yellow gown and fur-trimmed cloak, rendered in Chéret’s characteristic lively, colorful advertising style. Printed in Paris by Imprimerie Chaix (Ateliers Chéret). The Musée des Arts Décoratifs confirms Chéret, the Chaix printing, and the 1894 date; the Bibliothèque nationale de France records the original as a color lithograph size: 41" W X 54" H. See less
