Substantial and beautifully made, this pedestal dining table pairs a faceted hexagonal column clad in polished brass with richly figured burl wood, a combination that defined high-end American furniture design of the late 1970s. The column rises from a stepped hexagonal burl plinth bordered in mitered brass molding and terminates in a round burl cap that supports the beveled glass top. The brass has developed a warm, mellow patina and the burl shows dramatic swirling grain and depth of color throughout. Because the pedestal is centered and the base is compact, the table seats comfortably without any leg interference. Exact age is unknown, though style points to a 1970's date.
Henredon was founded in 1945 in Morganton, North Carolina, taking its name from a blend of its three founders' surnames. The company built its reputation on furniture made to a standard well above the industry norm — hand-selected veneers, hand-rubbed finishes, and joinery closer to custom cabinetmaking than mass production. Through the 1970s and 1980s Henredon produced some of the most ambitious brass and burl designs of the era, and later collaborated with designers including Ralph Lauren, Barbara Barry, and Mark Hampton. Pieces from this period remain among the most sought-after American furniture of the late twentieth century.

The glass top has minor surface scratches associated with use but no chips or cracks. The burl wood is gorgeous, with some minimal surface scratches. The brass displays patina, and has been left unpolished. There are no dents in the brass. There are some rub marks where diners have placed their feet (see last picture). Overall the table feels authentic and luxurious. less
