Pair of vienna secession chairs j.&j. Kohn model 423, attributed to josef hoffmann
for sale is a rare pair of chairs, model 423, by j.&j. Kohn (vienna, austria), based on a design attributed to josef hoffmann.
the chairs date from the time of the vienna secession and the wiener werkstätte (circa 1905–1915). Their construction, proportions, and finish correspond to model 423 by j.&j. Kohn, which is documented in historical catalogs and available from specialized dealers.
both chairs bear partially preserved maker's marks. These marks reveal fragments such as "j.&j. \.", "\.kohn", and "vienna, austria".
the original wooden frame is in good condition for its age. Despite their age, the chairs are remarkably stable and show no noticeable play in the joints. The upholstery has been renewed over time. The backrest cushions have been partially removed, revealing the original construction. One backrest has been opened to document its design.
