This piece is a great example of the transition period between the heavy, boxy, American Empire style and the extravagant, detailed Victorian era. It showcases large rope-twist pillars and deeply undercut, hand-carved wooden leaf pulls directly attached to the drawer fronts. This shift to highly detailed, stylized foliage reflects the early Victorian obsession with romanticism and the natural world, breaking up the otherwise severe, straight geometry of the Empire frame. This sideboard was built to hold the weight of dining linen and the popular ironstone dishes of the time. It's heavy iron double set castors have a third hidden perpendicular wheel above allowing 360 degree movement. It is a shame that the two lower drawers are missing the key hole escutcheons, but also quite remarkable that this piece has survived the test of time in such great condition. See less
