The leaded glass panel was meticulously salvaged from the historic John Chambers Memorial Presbyterian Church, located at 28th and Morris Streets in South Philadelphia. Funded at the turn of the century by legendary department store magnate John Wanamaker, the church's interior glass commissions were executed by the globally renowned Willet Stained Glass Window Studio of Philadelphia. We have pictures from the removal job for provenance.
This window showcases an elegant late Victorian/Gothic transitional aesthetic. It features elongated vertical pale-green slag panels terminating in soft, scalloped arches, anchored along the base by a striking row of vibrant orange-amber geometric quatrefoil and stylized clover motifs. The swirled, multi-toned marble texturing of the antique opalescent slag glass diffuses light beautifully, producing an incredibly warm and vivid glow when backlit.
To elevate the panel for high-end interior display, it has been enclosed in a newly hand-crafted, solid maple wood presentation frame. Built using traditional, heirloom woodworking techniques, the frame features robust mortise and tenon joinery secured with exposed wooden drawbores to pull the joints permanently tight without metal fasteners. The wood has been sealed to a smooth, elegant tactile finish.
This is a salvaged piece that was on its way to the dumpster. We did what we could in the time we had to do as good a job as possible to keep the pieces intact. That being said, the church that was congregating had neglected the upkeep and many pieces throughout the building were broken. Any cracks in the glass have been stabilized by two part epoxy and some of the leading is broken. They are stable in their frames. I made sure of it. I am a pretty good carpenter. The frames are maple and are put together with mortise and tenon joinery and drawbores to hold them together.
A custom crate will be built for transport. I spent too much time 3 stories in the air on scaffolding to risk any damage in transit. See less
