An exceptional and rare 19th-century French Napoleon III portico clock, uniquely customized with an enamel dial for the Ottoman Empire market. This exquisite timepiece blends classic Parisian horology with historical East-West export trade, making it a spectacular statement piece for decorators, collectors, and history enthusiasts alike.
The clock is designed in the architectural temple style, supported by four masterfully carved ebonized wood barley-twist columns with gilded capitals and bases. The ebonized architectural base and stepped pediment feature delicate, inlaid foliate marquetry that delivers beautiful, muted contrast against the rich black finish.
The focal point is a gorgeous white enamel dial framed by a heavy, ornate gilt-bronze (ormolu) repoussé bezel. In place of standard Roman numerals, the dial showcases elegant Ottoman Turkish numbers, specific to high-end European exports of the 1860–1880 era. Suspended between the pillars is an oversized, elaborately detailed cast-brass gridiron pendulum. Equipped with a two-arbor mechanical French movement, it historically struck on a internal bell on the hour and half-hour.
