Rendered primarily in graphite and gray wash, the full-length figure wears an ornate headdress, layered robes, patterned armor-like details, and carries a curved sword. The accomplished handling of fabric, ornament, pose, and theatrical detail gives the drawing wonderful presence despite its restrained monochromatic palette.

The work is inscribed “Oriental Stage Costume” along the lower margin and is associated with John Burnet, London. The terminology reflects the historic theatrical description appearing on the work and is retained here as part of its original context.
