This 3x5 Art Deco rug, hand-knotted in wool and dating to circa 1950–1959, reflects the evolution of postwar French textile design through a bold abstract layout, balancing sculptural geometry with a restrained modernist palette.
On the Design:
This rug departs from the symmetry of earlier decorative traditions in favor of a fluid, abstract layout that emphasizes movement and spatial rhythm. Interlocking curves, stepped geometric forms, and layered circular elements unfold across the field with an almost architectural cadence, creating a layout that feels both structured and spontaneous. Rather than centering on a dominant motif, the design encourages the eye to travel continuously across the surface, embodying the modernist fascination with dynamic form and visual balance that defined French decorative arts in the mid-twentieth century.
Its palette is intentionally subdued, pairing warm taupe, parchment, mocha, dusty rose, muted burgundy, slate blue, and charcoal to soften the graphic quality of the design. The interplay between sweeping curves and angular elements lends the layout a sculptural depth, while subtle variations in color reinforce its sense of movement without overwhelming the eye. The result is a sophisticated textile that bridges Art Deco's geometric heritage with the emerging abstract language of postwar French design, making it an exceptional statement piece for both modern and collected interiors. The accompanying book, Scandinavian Design & the United States, 1890–1980 by Bobbye Tigerman and Monica Obniski, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B047) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
