A French Empire period
allegory of knowledge clock, circa 1800.
Made of mercury-gilt bronze and polished with agate,
it rests on a sea-green marble base.
The movement is housed in a cabinet adorned with book spines in a library. A woman leans on the arm, reading on one side; on the other, an armillary sphere.
The base is supported by four feet shaped like spinning tops.
In very good condition, the clock comes with its original pendulum and winding key.
The clock is functional and has just been serviced.
Height: 35 cm, Width: 30 cm.
Provenance: - French private collection.
